Course Information
CPC33020 Certificate III in Bricklaying and Blocklaying provides a trade outcome in bricklaying and blocklaying for residential, commercial and other construction contexts. The qualification includes common construction industry skills as well as specialist bricklaying, blocklaying and masonry skills.
Learners develop the ability to handle and prepare materials, use masonry tools and equipment, carry out masonry veneer and cavity brick construction, lay walls and corners, construct multi-thickness walls and piers, install flashings and damp-proof courses, construct arches and curved walls, and build structural masonry systems. It supports occupational outcomes such as Bricklayer and Blocklayer.
Completion of the general construction induction training program is required for anyone carrying out construction work. The unit CPCWHS1001 Prepare to work safely in the construction industry has been selected to support this requirement.
Aims and Learning Outcomes
The CPC33020 Certificate III in Bricklaying and Blocklaying prepares graduates to undertake trade-level masonry work in residential and commercial construction. It develops the knowledge and practical skills required to work safely and effectively and to carry out a range of bricklaying, blocklaying and masonry construction tasks under workplace conditions - combining foundational construction skills with specialist masonry skills.
Through completion of the qualification, graduates are expected to demonstrate the ability to:
- Interpret basic plans, specifications and workplace instructions.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors, trainers, peers and team members.
- Apply WHS requirements, safe work method statements, JSA and hazard controls.
- Select, handle, store and prepare masonry materials safely and appropriately.
- Select, set up, use, clean and maintain bricklaying and blocklaying tools.
- Carry out setting out, levelling, measurements and construction calculations.
- Lay walls, corners, multi-thickness walls, piers, veneer and cavity brickwork.
- Install flashings and damp-proof courses and apply moisture control.
- Construct arches, curved walls, steps, stairs and decorative or battered masonry.
- Apply quality checks, defect identification and corrective actions.
- Clean work areas, manage waste and follow environmental requirements.
- Work individually and as part of a team within construction routines.
Entry Requirements
To ensure an appropriate learning opportunity, candidates need to demonstrate the following:

Assessments
Units are assessed through varied methods including portfolios, reports, case studies, role-plays, workplace simulations, Q&A and practical assessments.

RPL & Credit Transfers
Contempo College provides Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and Credit Transfer (CT) options to all prospective students. Applications must be submitted prior to enrolment completion, with supporting evidence demonstrating existing competencies or equivalent qualifications for relevant course units. No RPL or CT applications will be accepted after enrolment is finalised.
