CPC33020 Certificate III in Bricklaying and Blocklaying provides a trade outcome in bricklaying and blocklaying for residential, commercial and other construction contexts. The qualification includes common construction industry skillsas well as specialist bricklaying, blocklaying and masonry skills. Learners develop the ability to handle and prepare materials, use bricklaying and blocklaying tools and equipment, carry out masonry veneer and cavity brick construction, lay masonry wallsand corners, construct multi-thickness walls and piers, install flashings and damp-proof courses, construct masonry arches and curved walls, construct structural masonry systems and complete related construction tasks.

The qualification supports occupational outcomes such as Bricklayer and Blocklayer. Learners develop the ability to interpret plans, work safely, carry out setting out, undertake levelling and measurements, use construction documentation,complete practical masonry tasks and apply quality checks in a simulated construction environment.

The CPC33020 Certificate III in Bricklaying and Blocklaying prepares graduates to undertake trade-level bricklaying and blocklaying work in residential and commercial construction environments. The qualification develops the knowledge andpractical skills required to work safely and effectively in the construction industry and to carry out a range of bricklaying, blocklaying and masonry construction tasks under workplace conditions.

Graduates develop foundational construction skills such as workplace communication, work planning, measurements and calculations, plan interpretation, WHS compliance, sustainable work practices, setting out and use of construction documentation.These general construction skills are progressively combined with specialist masonry skills, including preparing materials, using bricklaying and blocklaying tools and equipment, carrying out masonry veneer and cavity brick construction, laying walls and corners,constructing multi-thickness walls and piers, installing flashings and damp-proof courses, constructing arches and curved walls, constructing structural masonry systems and completing decorative or complex masonry work.

Through completion of the qualification, graduates are expected to demonstrate the ability to:

  • interpret basic plans, specifications and workplace instructions relevant to bricklaying and blocklaying work
  • communicate effectively with supervisors, trainers, peers and workplace team members
  • apply WHS requirements, safe work method statements, job safety analysis and hazard control measures
  • select, handle, store and prepare bricklaying and blocklaying materials safely and appropriately
  • select, set up, use, clean and maintain bricklaying and blocklaying tools and equipment
  • carry out setting out, levelling, measurements and construction calculations for masonry tasks
  • lay masonry walls, corners, multi-thickness walls, piers, veneer systems and cavity brickwork to specified standards
  • install flashings and damp-proof courses and apply moisture control requirements
  • construct masonry arches, curved walls, steps, stairs and decorative or battered masonry elements
  • apply quality checks, defect identification and corrective actions to completed work
  • clean work areas, manage waste and follow environmental requirements
  • work individually and as part of a team within construction work routines
