Course Information
Qualification Description
This qualification reflects the role of individuals working as designers or design paraprofessionals who support professional engineers within the civil construction domain. This course prepares students to perform tasks involving a high level of autonomy and apply significant judgement in planning and determining the selection of equipment/roles/techniques for themselves and others.
Student will develop site specific work designs to ensure the implementation of the client’s site requirements. They demonstrate the application of a broad range of technical, managerial, coordination and planning skills. Course structure includes broad competency areas such as CAD/AUTOCAD operations, engineering drawings, engineering calculations and maths, and designs for civil structures.
Licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification considerations
There is no direct link between this qualification and licensing, legislative and/or regulatory requirements. However, where required, a unit of competency will specify relevant licensing, legislative and/or regulatory requirements that impact on the unit.

Aims and Learning Outcome
Graduates of this qualification will be able to develop high-level skills and knowledge in managing civil construction design projects using CAD/AUTOCAD.
They will also develop knowledge and skills in applying civil construction design principles in urban and rural structures.
Graduates will:
- Demonstrate the self-directed development and achievement of broad and/ or highly specialised areas of civil construction planning and design.
- Develop practical and technical skills to work with civil engineers on the design and construction of infrastructure projects.
- Create pathway opportunities for further qualifications and learning.
Students will have opportunity to use and learn computer-aided design (CAD) drawing software and equipment as part of this course. Students will also visit civil construction projects and sites as part of excursion plans and learn from industry experts (guest speakers) in application of design skills in real-word projects.
Entry Requirements
To ensure an appropriate learning opportunity, candidates need to demonstrate a capacity to undertake study at Advanced Diploma level, this can be demonstrated via the following:

Note: Students who do not meet the minimum English requirement for this course will need to package this course with an appropriate English Course before they can proceed into this course/qualification. An Internal English Test is available on request. Students must supply own equipment – a laptop or similar device to support learning and practice during and outside classroom hours. The required software, or software access, will be provided by Contempo.

Course Duration and Structure
The course is conducted over a period of 78 weeks.
- 60 Weeks of scheduled study period (6 terms of 10 weeks each)
- 18 Weeks of scheduled breaks holidays and student pre and post training activities
Notes
- A minimum of 20 contact hours per week of study/tuition have been scheduled by the Contempo College – to ensure students meet their student study Visa conditions.
- Additionally, students will be required to undertake activities such as homework, research, revision, and prepare for assessments and examinations relevant to each unit of competency in their own time.
- The course duration may vary for students who have been granted credits towards this course (e.g., students having completed any units in a previous course/qualification).

Delivery Mode
This course is delivered face to face and is classroom-based. All units are delivered and assessed using a combination of the following instructor‐led methods; face to face in a classroom, in a simulated business environment and accessing learning and assessment resources via an approved E-Learning platform

Assessments
Units are assessed through varied methods including portfolios, reports, case studies, role-plays, workplace simulations, Q&A and AutoCAD practical assessments.
Language, Literacy and Numeracy Support
For all students, strong Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) skills are fundamental to supporting vocational learning, employability, and effective workplace communication, regardless of their course or training level. To ensure students receive the necessary support, all students undergo LLN testing during Orientation to determine their skill levels and identify any required support. Contempo College uses these assessments to tailor assistance, ensuring learners develop the essential LLN competencies needed for their course and future employment.
Recognition Prior Learning (RPL)/Credit Transfers
Contempo College provides Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and Credit Transfer (CT) options to all prospective students. Applications must be submitted prior to enrolment completion, with supporting evidence demonstrating existing competencies or equivalent qualifications for relevant course units. No RPL or CT applications will be accepted after enrolment is finalised.
Academic Pathways
Expected entry into this program includes candidates with:
- A range of certificate level courses – minimum academic level year 12 or equivalent.
On successful completion of this course students can progress to:
RII60520 Advanced Diploma of Civil Construction Design or any other desirable and related advanced diploma level civil construction or building and construction course. Contempo College provides guidance on pathway options to RII60520 Advanced Diploma of Civil Construction Design with reduced duration with credit transfers as part of student support.
Note:
- This qualification requires competency in all 20 units. Partial completion results in a Statement of Attainment for achieved units only.
